Minerals' G.E.C. Mine, Permit Number C-81-037, was a permitted coal
mine, for which the permit was revoked in 1984 and the bond forfeited
May 21, 1987. Funding to complete the reclamation of a portion of this site
will be provided from the forfeited surety and letter of credit, currently
administered by the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Division. There is a
$466,000.00 bond on the site; reclamation will be accomplished in 3-4
projects. This project is valued at 10-15Y of the bond.
PROJECT WORK DESCRIPTION
INTRODUCTION
The State of Colorado is initiating reclamation of the G.E.C. site in the
Tipple portion of the mine, located in Section 24, T205, R70W, and performing
maintenance on a pond and a reclaimed pit located in Sections 19 and 30,
T20S, R69W. Earthmoving activities in Section 24 involve filling of a pit
referred to as the Orphan Pit, backfilling of waste material against a four
hundred foot long, thirty-foot tall highwall, regrading of a gullied drainage,
removing a pond embankment and preparing the Orphan Pit Reclamation Haul Road
for seeding. A limited volume of topsoil is available, to be respread, to a
depth of six inches (6"> on 3.7 acres of regraded Orphan Pit area. The 7.2
acres comprising the Orphan Pit, topsoil pile, red rock area, haul road and
pond will be fertilized, seeded and mulched, as will another 27 acres of
previously graded land. All measurements are approximate.
Maintenance in Sections 19 and 30 consist of pond sediment removal and
stabilization of gullies on the reclaimed slope of the West Pit. A pond
adjacent to the County Road in Section 19 will be emptied of 5.5 acre-feet of
sediment. The gullies in the 11.5-acre West Pit, located in Section 30, need
to be graded closed, and re-seeded.
It is estimated that reclamation will begin in early September 1992, and is
expected to be completed within two-and-a-half weeks.
-3-
