• 2 . 2 SCOPING OF SURVEY PROCEDURES
The methods used to conduct a systematic search for
black-footed ferrets were based primarily on the "Handbook
of Methods for Locating Black-Footed Ferrets" (Clark et al .
1984) , a letter from the USFWS (Helena , Montana) dated
November 8, 1985 which describes ferret survey procedures
(USFWS 1985) , USFWS final guidelines for ferret surveys
published by Region 6 in March 1986 , and personal
communication with Mr . Hallowed, Wildlife Biologist . with
the Meeker office of the Bureau of Land Management
(BLM) . All references reflect current knowledge of black-
footed ferret behavior and biology as gained from intensive
study of the world ' s only known population of this mammal
• near Meeteetse, Wyoming .
2 . 3 EXISTING INFORMATION SEARCH
Existing information regarding historic and recent
sightings of black-footed ferrets on or near the study was
reviewed.
