• 2 .0 METHODS <br /> Major tasks completed for the black—footed ferret <br /> survey of prairie dog towns to bl, affected by Refuse Sub Area <br /> #4 included: <br /> Mapping of prairie dog towns . <br /> Scoping the surveys with affected agency <br /> personnel and developing acceptable survey <br /> procedures . <br /> Review of existing information regarding recent <br /> and historic ferret sightings near the areas <br /> surveyed. <br /> Implementation of field surveys . <br /> 2 . 1 MAPPING OF PRAIRIE DOG TOWNS <br /> • Prairie dog towns within the entire Deserado Mine <br /> permit were initially mapped in 1979 by Mr.Duane Smith, <br /> under contract to WFU Inc . , as part of the mine ' s permit <br /> application . Mr . Tim Chervick, Environmental Coordinator for <br /> WFU, updated this mapping in the spring of 1986 and again in <br /> 1989 to ensure a current update for the ferret search <br /> described herein . <br /> Mariah Associates, Inc . was retained by WFU in June 1986 <br /> in order to conduct a black—footed ferret survey with <br /> Mr . Chervick assisting on the project team. The aerial <br /> extent of all prairie dog towns on the permit area was <br /> also verified by a Colorado Division of Wildlife (CDOW) <br /> employee in 1985 . <br /> • <br />
