• 2 .4 SELECTION OF PROJECT TEAM <br /> The field supervisor for the project was selected <br /> in consideration of the individual ' s past involvement in <br /> ferret searches conducted in accordance with USFWS search <br /> criteria and in consideration of the individual ' s successful <br /> completion of the USFWS' training workshop on black-footed <br /> survey techniques . The field technician, possessed an <br /> educational background in the biological sciences . He was <br /> trained by WFU (prior to initiating field surveys) to <br /> recognize diagnostic ferret sign and was thoroughly <br /> familiarized with planned survey techniques . <br /> • 2 . 5 NOCTURNAL SEARCHES <br /> Three consecutive nights (August 7, 8, and 9 ) of <br /> spotlight searches for black-footed ferrets were conducted <br /> on the prairie dog towns shown in Figure 1 . 1 . Search <br /> efforts encompassed not only those towns to be directly <br /> impacted by Refuse Area *4 but also those towns within one <br /> half mile of the Area . Spotlighting was conducted between <br /> dusk and dawn by two observers either driving a four-wheel <br /> drive vehicle slowly through the towns (approximately 5 <br /> MPH) , or maintaining stationary watch positions, while <br /> sweeping the light beam of 300. 000 candle power spotlight <br /> across the town being surveyed. The biologists alternated <br /> driving and handling the spotlight throughout the night . <br /> • The light beam of the spotlight was moved to cover all areas <br />
