The field technician, possessed an
educational background in the biological sciences . He was
trained by WFU (prior to initiating field surveys) to
recognize diagnostic ferret sign and was thoroughly
familiarized with planned survey techniques .
• 2 . 5 NOCTURNAL SEARCHES
Three consecutive nights (August 7, 8, and 9 ) of
spotlight searches for black-footed ferrets were conducted
on the prairie dog towns shown in Figure 1 . 1 . Search
efforts encompassed not only those towns to be directly
impacted by Refuse Area *4 but also those towns within one
half mile of the Area . Spotlighting was conducted between
dusk and dawn by two observers either driving a four-wheel
drive vehicle slowly through the towns (approximately 5
MPH) , or maintaining stationary watch positions, while
sweeping the light beam of 300. 000 candle power spotlight
across the town being surveyed. The biologists alternated
driving and handling the spotlight throughout the night .
• The light beam of the spotlight was moved to cover all areas
