Ivtr. David Berry
Senior Environmental Protection Specialist
December 19, 1997
Page 3
Beaz's mining permit contains reports on the 1993 and 1996 Access Road Slide -Cause
and Repair Plan (File #5).
S. Please describe the geologic and engineering analysis of the current landslide that you
have conducted to date.
Bear - No geologic or engineering analysis of the current landslide has been conducted by
Beaz to date.
9. Please provide any and all of your B-Seam permeability and secondary porosity data.
Mr. Stover, on behalf of Bear, has suggested that there may be high secondary porosity in
the unmined coal block between the MCC Northwest (NW) Panel sealed sump and the
Bear Mine. MCC would appreciate receiving any data the Mr. Stover has in this regard.
Bear -Bear does not have any data on B-Seam permeability. The suggested high
secondary porosity in the utunined coal block between the MCC N W Panel sealed sump
and the Bear mine is based on Bear personnel's observation of water flowing through the
unmined coal block.
10. Given that the 1995 and 1996 Bear Mine Annual Hydrology Reports (AHRs) describe
water inflows to the B-Seam, we presume that it was necessary for the Beaz Mine to
evaluate how this water would impact slope stability. To answer this question, you
would presumably need to determine how the mine inflows move through the mine,
where they accumulate on the north side of the mine and, ultimately, where and how the
water would dischazge. MCC is quite interested in learning the details of your evaluation
of this kind. Would you expect the Edwards Mine to represent an outfall for the Beaz
Mine water?
Bear -Bear has not evaluated how the water inflows to the B-Seam would impact slope
stability. The Edwards Mine is apparently the outfall for water which flows through the
Beaz No. 3 Mine.
11. When mine inflows were noticed at the Third West Seal in June 1995, did Beaz Coal
Company sample these unprecedented inflows for either field pazameters or lab analysis?
Please provide mining records, notes, photos or other information documenting and
recording these inflows.
Bear -The best information available on the flow from the third west seal is presented in
the 1996 AHR . The water was monitored as it was discharged from Outfall 001.
