Mr. David Berry
Senior Envirotunental Protection Specialist
December 19, 1997
Page 4
12. How many measurements of the mine inflows were made during 1995 that lead to the
constant 18 gpm value for June through December 1995 indicated in your 1995 AHR?
Beaz -The 18 gpm flow value was measured once or twice during the year. The flow
remained constant throughout the year so numerous measurements were not considered
necessary.
13. In your 1996 AHR, the mine inflows for December 1996 are noted as zero. Does this
indicate that Bear did not treat and discharge any mine inflows or that mine inflows
ceased?
Bear -Bear ceased the dischazge of mine water in September 1996 after a massive roof
fall and floor heave forced the installation of seals immediately inby sixth east. The mine
water from second west continued to flow and was consumed by the mine operation. The
mine water from third west was apparently contained within the roof fall and floor heave
rubble because it did not emerge from the seals inby sixth east before mining ceased at
the Bear No. 3 Mine in November 1996.
14. MCC's calculations of water discharge through the coal block between the N W Panel
sealed sump and the Bear Mine are based on the respective mine maps of MCC and Bear.
Can Bear representatives confirm that Beaz did not mine to the south of its prescribed
boundary and, on the north side of the Beaz Mine, that mining stopped at the prescribed
boundary all as depicted on the maps?
Bear -Yes. See B-Seam Progress Map, (File #7). Can MCC make the same
confirmation?
15. Is there historical evidence of water at the Bear Mine with high electrical conductivity
values? What do the Bear AHRs indicate on this subject?
Bear -The water which was discharged by Bear during 1996 (Outfa11001) had
conductivity values which would be expected for water from a coal mine. Conductivity
measurements ranged from 3,000 to 4,000 umhos/cm.
16. Please describe the ventilation system for the Beaz Mine. Is the Bear Mine now
completely sealed?
Bear -See the mine map for the layout of the ventilation system. The Bear No. 3 Mine is
now completely sealed (File #7).
