33

'
activity might discourage use of nearby habitat by nocturnal animals.
On the other hand, the noise and glare of movies, which are environmentally
' undesirable near habitations could bother no one here.
8. Trap-shooting and rifle range
' Shooting is noisy, objectionable and sometimes dangerous in open areas
near habitation. As time goes on fewer sites are available for the shooting
' public. Furthermore, as metals become more scarce, it is a good conserva-
tion practice to recover spent shot. The quarry could be arranged to simpli-
fy shot recovery. Properly arranged, rifle slugs would never leave the
quarry and noise could be confined.
' Few paces are available where moving targets for shotgunners can be
released overhead to simulate "pass shooting." Here targets could be
' released from different benches to provide several heights.
Compatible only with alternative 1.
' Needs
.The pit bottom and operating area would need to be reasonably level to provide
parking, different trap-shooting facilities and rifle range. Water,
' electricity and sanitary facilities should be present. Landscaping on
the lower benches would be helpful.
' Environmental Impacts
Small residues of motor oil and gasoline might wash into Strain Gulch.
' Shooting might discourage use of nearby habitats by sensitive forms of
wildlife.
' 9. Water Storage Reservoir
Compatible only with alternative 3. Few water storage facilities can be
found where 2,000 acre feet might be stored under a 15.6 acre surface.
' It is situated where the water could be withdrawn by siphon without use
of supplemental power. The water from Strain Gulch watershed is normally
of good quality, but it would take about ten years of normal run-off to
' fill the reservoir.
Needs
' The maximum planned pit would have to be excavated to provide the full
2,000 acre feet of storage.
' Environmental Impacts
No detrimental impacts are likely. Creation of a water habitat would be
beneficial for both aquatic and terrestrial wildlife and provide a potential
' for increased recreation.
