1
34

10. Recreation Lake
' Alternative 3 only.
A completed pit would permit a lake of 15.6 acres and maximum depth of
' 240 feet. The depth and water quality would make the lake suitable for
both warm water and cold water fish. Fishin g would have to be on a put
and take basis as little spawn ing area would be available. Fish foods
' would likely have to be based on plankton at the bottom of the food chain.
The present operating area and possibly the lower benches could be developed
for picnicking.
'
Needs
' Strain Gulch stream would be permitted to drain into the pit, with an
outlet into the present underground pipe. Soil deep enough for grasses and
shrubs would be needed on parts of the operating area and lower benches.
' Landscaping of all benches wou]d be desirable.
Water and sanitary facilities and parking facilities would be needed.
' A boat landing would be desirable.
Environmental Impacts
' No serious detrimental impacts are apparent. Favorable impacts might be
expected for both aquatic and terrestrial v+ildlife, for scenics and for
recreation. A recreation lake would be compatible with recreational use
' of the adjoining Denver mountain park unit and Mt. Falcon recreation
lands. It could serve as a trail head for access to those lands.
Recreational use would also be compatible with most uses to which the
' remaining Cooley Gravel Company lands might be devoted, such as housing
development.
' 11. Solar Energy Collecting Site
Solar energy is now starting to be used for heating individual buildings.
t Is it likely that in the future solar energy might be collected and converted
to electricity or other transferable form for use elsewhere? The Quarry
will have a lot of surface facing south, southeast and southwest. Could
reflectors be set on some surfaces and collectors on others to collect
' concentrated radiant energy?
Needs
' As this possibility is without known precedent, no special needs can be
anticipated. Either the quarry will provide a useful land form, or it will
not.
Environmental Impact
No detrimental impacts anticipated. Capture of solar energy could have
a number of beneficial reactions.
1
