time will not permit accurate testing of nutrient levels prior to
seeding. The fertilization can he done either before or after seeding,
• but it is important that if it is done after seeding then it should
occur within qne week of =_eedinq.
Pre-emergent weed control should NAT be used as it will not only
act to prevent the weeds from growing but also most of the desirable
species. Weed control, if used at all, should occur after the
vegetation has become reasonably well established. Weed control in
these sails is not recommended unless the weed growth is so strong it is
clearly interferring with the development of the vegetation. In sandy
soils, the often rapid weed growth in the first two years is of greater
benefit than detriment. It provides cover and helps to control wind
erasion better than even the hest mulches. After the first two years
the density of weeds usually declines very rapidly unless the land is
• redisturbed. If a weed control program is instituted, it should be very
carefully considered as certain control methods will eliminate the
valuable legumes in the revegetation program. Therefore, the best
control in this case would 6e a mechanical method, namely, mowing.
Mulches on this site will not be used except in very special
circumstances. Those circumstances will include any situation where
unusually dry, steep, and erosive slopes are encountered. These
conditions should be avoided as they will not revegetate well under any
circumstances. Put if a slope of 2:1 which is south facing and does not
have at least six inches of excellent topsoil on it is encountered, then
a mulch of 3444 to 4404 pounds per acre of weed free straw should be
spread after seeding and fertilizing. Alsq, an additional 44 pounds per
•
F'A6E 1~ OF 14 - EXHIBIT E
