•
About .5 acre of additional filling wag completed. Also as a result
of efforts to support the slope to the south of the Fountain Mutual Ditch,
fill was placed for a support berm below the ditch. It is expected this
berm will be completed in the next few months.
The west end of this berm was seeded, but the unusually dry conditions
this spring may not result in much success with this seeding. No
assessment of that can be made until about mid-summer.
The largest amount of reclamation actually occurred outside the permit
area. As a result of lowering the west side of the pit the adjacent
landowner requested Castle Concrete to grade their land so as to
topographically merge this land with their land. This area, totaling about
3 acres, was graded in 1987 and seeded in early April 1988. Because this
land is nearly level, it appears the seeding was considerably more
successful than that in the pit area which is on a south facing slope of
between 3:1 and 2:1 grade.
RULE 2.41 3 THE LOCATION AND NUMBER OF ACRES IN THE VARIOUS STAGES OF
RECLAMATION (BACRFILLED, GRADED, TOPSOIL REPLACED, REVEGETATED).
A total of about 6.5 acres of the operation is under some type of
reclamation. Some of this is contained in the highway slopes on the east
side of the operation, but the major part of the reclamation is within the
pit area, mostly associated with the Fountain Mutual Ditch. Furthermore,
during the last year, meetings have been held with adjacent landowners in
an attempt to control the drainage from the land to the north which has
been causing erosion problems on the slope above the ditch. No resolution
of the problem has been reached yet, but designs are in progress [o relieve
this problem. Until [hat problem is corrected, further revegetation of the
slope north of the ditch would be hopeless.
RULE 2.41 4 THE SPECIES OF VEGETATION PLANTED, THE LOCATIONS AND
APPROXIMATE DATES OF PLANTING.
The seeding occurred in early April 1988. As noted before, most of
the seeding was done on about 3 acres to the west of the operation on
adjacent land graded by Castle Concrete as per a request by the land owner.
But about .5 acre was seeded within the operation. The mixture used was:
SPECIES RATE ~ PLS/AC.-BROADCAST)
STANDARD CRESTED WHEATGRASS 5
INTERMEDIATE WHEATGRASS 5
PUBESCENT WHEATGRASS 5
RUSSIAN WILDRYE 4
SMOOTH BROME 6
YELLOW SWEETCLOVER 1
26
Page 2 of 3 1988 SAND PIT ANNUAL REPORT
