• <br />C' <br />RULE 2.41 5 THE TYPE AND APPROXIMATE QUANTITY OF FERTILIZERS, ORGANIC <br />MATERIAL, OR SOIL CONDITIONERS USED AND LOCATION OF USE. <br />No fertilizers were used or other soil amendments. Experience has <br />shown that in this very sandy soil material, fertilizers leach out too <br />rapidly to be of much use. Furthermore, fertilizer usually helps the weeds <br />more than it helps the desirable vegetation. <br />RULE 2.41 6 AN APPRAISAL OF THE SUCCESS OF RECLAMATION EFFORTS, AND <br />IN THE EVENT OF FAILURE OF ANY EFFORTS, A SHORT NARRATIVE ON THE <br />SUSPECTED OR DETERMINED CAUSE OF SUCH FAILURE. <br />Severe problems have been encountered with the revegetation of this <br />site. In part, this is due to the very sandy growth medium which has a low <br />water holding capacity. Various methods are being examined to increase <br />this water holding capacity. Mulches have been considered, but the <br />material is so sandy it is not felt a mulch would be of much benefit. The <br />real problem is achieving a level of water holding capacity that the <br />vegetation can become established. Mulch would cool the material and <br />reduce water loss, but it appears the primary direction of water loss is <br />down rather than up, that is seepage is so rapid the water sinks beyond the <br />point where roots can reach it rather than evaporating. In these <br />situations, mulch does little good. <br />The other problem is aspect. Most of the areas which have been seeded <br />with poor to moderate success face south and are on relatively steep <br />slopes. Heat build-up in the medium is very intense with temperatures <br />in the summer often exceeding 100 degrees within the first inch of the <br />medium. A mulch would help to reduce this temperature, but if the water <br />cannot be retained, even cool temperatures would not result in good <br />growth. Once again, until the medium can be modified so as to hold more <br />water, a cooler growth medium would not be of great benefit. <br />RULE 2.41 7 ESTIMATES OF THE LOCATION AND NUMBER OF ACRES TO BE <br />AFFECTED IN THE COMING YEAR. <br />It is difficult to determine how much additional land will be affected <br />in the next year, but certainly it will not be a great deal more than <br />about 3 acres. About all that is left to be mined is the dike area. <br />With both Castle Concrete and Daniels Sand working on removal of this <br />sand it should not last more than a few years, even with a depressed <br />market demand. Therefore, at least 90~ of the mining which will occur <br />in the next year will be done on the south side of the operation and <br />with the remainder of the mining occurring in the pit floor and on the <br />west side. <br />MAP: Attached is a map prepared on the newly acquired and installed <br />computer mapping system. All future annual report maps will be prepared on <br />these types of maps. The system permits not only 2-dimensional mapping to <br />great accuracy and precise scaling, but also permits 3-dimensional modeling <br />of topography which will be useful in designing reclamation and mining <br />plans for areas exhibiting rough topography, <br />Page 3 of 3 1988 SAND PIT ANNUAL REPORT <br />
