' Bradford Janes - 4 - February 2, 1990
' 5. It is not clear in the application if the operator intends to reseed the
pre-law, original limited impact permit areas and previous amendment
areas identified under Exhibits C-1 and F. As discussed under paragraph
9 of Exhibit E, the MLRD does not expect a vegetative cover equivalent to
the surrounding undisturbed grassland, and the intent here is
' stabilization by vegetation to the extent possible. Since vegetation
stabilization is a goal, the operator should reaffirm their intent to
seed and revegetate these areas.
6. The proposed seed mix, which was successful in Section 33, appears to be
useful on harsh sites. The Division recommends that western wheatgrass
and side-oats gramma (both species were recommended in the 1978 and 1982
' SCS Inventory and Evaluation reports) be added to the seed mix. Also,
because of its adaptability to harsh sites, palatability to wildlife and
cattle, and its ability to do well at this location as evidenced by its
presence on both the "reference knob" and on undisturbed areas adjacent
to the current mining activity, it is strongly recommended that four-wing
saltbush be added to this seed mix. The current rate of 20#/acre is
' acceptable, these species should be added and the amount of crested and
slender wheatgrass reduced to maintain the same amount of seed per acre.
7. On the remainder of the proposed permit area, primarily Phases IV and V
' as shown in the application, the applicant proposes to re-establish
vegetation which will approximate the percent cover of the surrounding
lands. Since these sites are not unusually harsh, to achieve a diverse,
effective, long-lasting cover the Division would prefer that the seed mix
be modified.

Several of the species in the current (proposed) mix are easily
established giving rapid erasion control, but are short-lived or
excessively competitive with longer-lived species which are more
desirable fora long-lasting cover. Therefore, it is recommended that
most of the currently proposed species be retained, in smaller
quantities, and additional longer lived species be added for a more
diverse community.
One possible mix is as follows:
Percent by
Number of
Pure Live Seeds
Total Weight of
Pure Live Seed
for Broadcasting
Crested Wheatgrass 15 3#
Slender Wheatgrass 10 2#
Western Wheatgrass 25 7#
Blue Grama 15 1#
Side-oats Grama 10 2#
'
Russian Wildrye 10 2#
Cicer Milkvetch 5 1#
Yellow sweet clover 5 1#
Four-wing saltbush 5 1#
~~ ~
