LIFE OF MINING AR~ -Several factors affect the lifef most sand and gravel
operations. Most notable are the surrounding communities' future gravel, asphalt and
concrete needs. Other factors include:
^ Local, State, and Federal Economic Trends
^ Future Local Growth Trends
o Major Public and Private Improvement Projects -
Rail and Airport
Major School
Major Governmental Building
^ Major Commercial Buildings
One method in determining the life of an operation is to evaluate the past demand for
gravel resources. By using the last five years of production at the Vagneur Gravel Pit in
conjunction with the remaining resource, it is forecasted that the gravel will be depleted in
about 20 to 25 years. It should be pointed out that forecasts are based on current and past
information. Inherent with any forecast is a degree of uncertainty. A 25 year life span is
a relatively short period of time for a sand and gravel operation, such as the one existing
in the Woody Creek area.
CRUSHING AND STOCKPILE AREAS -The excavated gravel resource is crushed and
stockpiled according to size on the pit floor. Maximum processing is approximately 3,000
tons per day. Since a portable crusher is used, the location of the crushing operation and
processed stockpiles change as the mining proceeds across the mining area. Crushing
operations do not occur during the winter months, unless market demands require
additional material. Water is used constantly during the crushing operation to control dust.
The water source is from an existing permitted well located on the property and is pumped
to an existing pond located near the asphalt production area.
SOIL STOCKPILE AREA - A single location has been identified within the mining area for
the stockpiling of inert soil which is brought to the facility from outside areas. The location
of this pile will change as mining progresses across the extraction area and the material
is used for sloping of the excavated mined areas during the reclamation process. Topsoil
is segregated from other soil and stored adjacent to the main stockpile. To date
approximate/y 412, 000 cubic yards of material is stockpiled. Material is truck to the facility
Rev. 01 /04/00 '-' --
