• Mr. Jo nn Hinton -2- June 27, 1983
Further south in the same "G" labelled area, west of the shop, there are
several gullies about two feet deep. Water appears to have broken through
contour furrows. The gullies have eroded recently and are not considered
stabilized.
Gully formation is also evident in Center Ridge on the west side and on the
east side above the old haul road. These gullies are not as large as the one
observed above, but they are also in "G" labelled areas and should, therefore,
be stabilized. (P & M is to repair the gullies in west Center Ridge this
summer.)
There is an area along the far east side of Center Ridge above the draw where
slumping has occurred. Additional cracks were observed above the slump which
will probably result in more slumping. This area is not considered stable,
but, at this point, the cause of slumping is unknown. If the slumping is due
to the mining operation, P & M could be held responsible. However, it may be
a natural phenomenon. To determine if it is mining-related, a map showing the
pit orientation is necessary and whether there was a low spot adjacent to the
slump area.
• The above areas have experienced recent erosion or slumping and, therefore,
these surface areas are not considered stabilized to control erosion. These
areas will have to be stabilized. For the first two erosion gullies
mentioned, P & M may want to consider establishing permanent drainage channels
that blend in with the surrounding topography and the undisturbed drainage
below. Rock cneck dams may be appropriate to use to slow the flow down.
A plan for gully repair has been proposed for the west side of Center Ridge.
The same plan would be acceptable for the east side of Center Ridge. The
cause of slumping on the east side of Center Ridge will have to be determined
and, if it is amining-related problem, the area must be stabilized.
The revegetation on all lands I inspected appeared to be established,
including South of Shop and Center Ridge. West Ridge was mined prior to any
reclamation laws, but P & M has voluntarily seeded it. Therefore, in West
Ridge, there are no revegetation requirements. For all revegetated areas, the
Division requests quantitative cover and productivity data. This data is
necessary to verify the revegetation success. A species list must also be
included. It would also be interesting to know what the woody plant density
is on the reclaimed areas, but this is not required. The quantitative
vegetation data should be collected by the areas shown on Exhibit 1, and dates
of planting (if known) should be stated.
•
