FROM BENSON BROTHERS • 03.28.1994 1Q,(_17 P. 2
UNITED BTATEe BOIL DELTA FIELD OFFICE
DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATION 690 INDUSTRIAL BLVD.
AORiCULTUAE SERVICE DELTA, CO 9116
P80NE ~ (303) 974-5735
FILE CODE: ECS 190-20 - Reclamation 3-25-94
SUBJECT: Temporary Erosion Control
TO: Katie Benson/Benson Bros. Truck & EQuip.
Some small gully erosion is occurinq on the hillside below your
equipment storage yard, office and shop. The source of water causing
this appears to be coming from drainage off the storage yard, office
and shop area. While there is some erosion, I do not feel it is
significant. Only a few gullies exist on the site. They are small
and the soil eroding from them is remaining at the bottom oP the
elope. Run ofP is not great enough to transport this material beyond
the bottom oP the hill and off Bite or onto or across the surrounding
roads. When you complete your operation and shape and seed this
hillside, erosion should be controlled.
I recommend the following two things Por temporary erosion Control on
this hillside until you implement your reclamation plan
Shape the top edge of the hill (storeys yard, office & shop) so that
water can be controlled and directed to a few points to run off down
the hillside. I suggest using a couple of the existing gullies to
carry this water. Just below the top of the hill place a bale of
straw in each gully. Hold the bale in placs using a metal fence post
driven into the ground at the bottom edge. Then place some cobble
rock at the top edge of the bale. Put another bale in the gully near
the bottom of the hill and one or two more between the top and bottom
bales. At the bottom of the hill down slope from where the water
exits the gullies, place .two more rows (spaced apart) of straw bales
across the path water flows to slow velocities. These barriers down
slope of. the gullies should ensure all eroded material is held on
site. Should the bales in the gullies not hold, try placing more
bales in the gullies at closer intervals. If this doesn't work, make
a series of barriers using woven wire fence tied between two fence
posts driven into the gully with a bale of straw and some cobble rock
placed above it. Some large cobble rock placed in the gullies between
barriers may help too. Another alternative should these barriers
Pail, is to place pipe or culverts in these gullies with large rock at
the bottom to prevent the run off from causing erosion.
Getting good vegetative cover on this hillside will be diPPicult with
it's steep slope and southern aspect. The weeds on it are helping to
hold the soil now. Broadcast seeding yellow sweetclover on this bite
may help to get more plant growth and stability. Please refer to the
attached Co-ECS-S for seeding rates and recommendations.
