Vegetation Cover
• Total vegetation cover of the 1985 Reclamation Area was 31.20 percent. Based on
cover sampling, graminoids provided 28.93 percent mean cover (91.20% relative
cover), forbs accounted for 1.73 percent mean cover (6.34% relative cover), and
succulents 0.53 percent mean cover (2.46% relative cover).
Six grass species were dominant in the 1985 Reclamation Area. These six species
included CalamovilFa longifolia with 9.60 percent mean cover (30.28% relative cover),
Bromus marginatus (mountain brome) with 7.20 percent mean cover and 19.72 percent
relative cover, Sporobolus airoides (alkali sacaton) with 3.73 percent mean cover
(14.79% relative cover), Andropogon hallii with 3.33 percent mean cover and 12.32
percent relative cover, Bouteloua gracilis with 2.27 percent mean cover (6.69%
relative cover), and Agropyron cristatum (crested wheatgrass) with 2.27 percent mean
cover and 5.99 percent relative cover. Ambrosia psilostachya (ragweed) provided the
most significant forb cover at 0.93 percent mean cover and 3.87 percent relative cover.
Vegetative litter (prior years growth, dead wood, and other biologic organic material)
comprised 50.53 percent ground cover within the 1985 Reclamation Area. Bare soil
comprised 18.27 percent of the ground cover encountered in the 1985 Reclamation
Area. No rock was recorded in the cover sampling.
• Species Diversity
Within the 1985 Reclamation Area three lifeforms were represented. The total number
of species encountered during cover sampling was sieteen. The sampling encountered
eight species of perennial grass, two annual grass species, two annual forbs, two
perennial forbs, and two succulent species. Of the species encountered on the 1985
Reclamation Area, 11 were native and five were introduced. Perennial species
outnumbered annual species by twelve to four. Seasonality of 1985 Reclamation Area
species was split between cool season, warm season and evergreen species. Six
graminoids were cool season species and four were warm season species. Three forb
species were identified as cool season and one as warm season. The succulent species
were evergreen.
Of the species encountered, six perennial grasses and one perennial forb represented
greater than three percent relative cover. The graminoid species included; Calamovilla
longifolia (30.28%), Bromus marginatus (19.72%), Sporobolus airoides (14.79%),
Andropogon hallii (12.32%), Bouteloua gracilis (6.69%), and Agropyron cristatum
(5.99%). The forb species was Ambrosia psilostachya (3.87%).
•
-7-
