• 1986 RECLAMATION AREA
The 198b Reclamation Area encompasses approximately 47 acres of reclaimed pit in
the central area of the Keenesburg Mine permit area. The 1986 Reclamation Area is
composed of three parcels (west, central, and east) separated by north-south haul road
corridors. This area is nearly flat with a gentle slope (< 1 °) to the north and east.
Reclamation and coincident revegetation within this area took place in 1986. Replaced
soils were generally sandy in texture. Specific sampling information for the 1986
Reclamation Area is contained in Table 4.
Vegetation Cover
Total vegetation cover of the 1986 Reclamation Area was 37.47 percent. Based on
cover sampling, graminoids represented 29.45 percent mean cover (86.43% relative
cover), forbs accounted for 4.13 percent mean cover (13.27% relative cover), and
shrubs/subshrubs accounted for 0.13 percent mean cover (0.29% relative cover).
The dominant plant species was Calamovi/fa longifolia with 13.53 percent mean cover
and 40.71 percent relative cover. There was one sub-dominant grass species:
Andropogon hallii with 5.65 percent mean cover and 16.81 percent relative cover.
Additional significant species included Bromus marginatus with 3.41 percent mean
• cover and 9.14 percent relative cover, Bouteloua gracilis with 2.47 percent mean cover
(7.6740 relative cover), Sporobolus airoides with 1.88 percent mean cover (6.19%
relative cover), Helianfhus annuus with 1.87 percent mean cover and 6.19 percent
relative cover, and Erigeron bel/idiastrum (daisy) with 1.07 percent mean cover
(3.83% relative cover).
Vegetative litter (prior years growth, dead wood, and other biologic organic material)
comprised 52.40 percent ground cover within the 1986 Reclamation Area. Baze soil
comprised 10.13 percent of the ground cover encountered in the 1986 Reclamation
Area. No rock was encountered in the cover sampling of this area.
Species Diversity
Within the 1986 Reclamation Area three lifeforms were represented; graminoids, forbs,
and shrubs. The lifeforms included nine species of perennial grasses, three perennial
forbs, four annual forbs, and one deciduous shrub. Of the species encountered on the
1986 Reclamation Area, 15 were native and two were introduced. Perennial species
outnumbered annual species by 13 to four. Seasonality of 1986 Reclamation Area
species was split between cool season and warm season species. Four graminoids were
cool season species and five were warm season species. Five of the forb species were
identified as cool season and two were warm season. The shrub was deciduous in
habit.

-8-
