•
i
•
Another area of drainage concern is the northeast corner of Phase lE -north. Abroad Swale
currently flows through this area carrying water from under Drennan Road to the south toward the
Fountain Mutual Ditch. In fact, some of this water is removed from the azea by flowing into the
ditch, when the flow volume is sufficient to actually make it that far. The regional drainage plan is
based upon the concept that the continued use of the irrigation ditch as a storm sewer is simply not
feasible. The drainage plan for this area indicates the volume of water flowing into this location is
not great. However, it is appazent that moving the ditch closer to Drennan Road would only increase
the probability that the ditch would carry storm water. Also, a 3:1 slope above the ditch, without
protection, would erode heavily with this flow and would not only dump the storm water into the
ditch but also the sediment.
A further problem with this area is the high probability that the land between the ditch and
Drennan Road will be developed. Storm water from that land will therefore increase and orily
further aggravate the problem of overloading the ditch with water.
The regional drainage plan for this area proposed some options. All options call for a grassed
waterway that would capture water from the Swale north of the northeast corner of Phase lE-north
and direct it to the Little Johnson Reservoir detention pond where it would be piped through storm
sewers to Fountain Creek. The land north of the ditch route proposed in this plan would be drained
either by ponds and waterways or by storm sewers or a combination of the two.
The regional drainage plan was drafted before this proposed plan was prepared and therefore
could not draw upon some of the advantages provided by this plan. First, the grassed waterway
which redirects water from the land north of the northeast corner of Phase lE -north could remain
viable. However, the design in this amendment allows for, if desirable, leaving up to 30 feet between
the toe of the slope north of the ditch and the edge of the ditch. This not only provides ready access
for ditch maintenance, but could also provide sufficient room to install a major storm sewer alongside
the ditch. Thus this plan allows for the utilization of the ditch route as a storm sewer route without
actually using the ditch as the storm sewer. This would reduce the cost of installing the storm sewer
and avoid the problems of extending a storm sewer at sufficient grade across somewhat hilly
topography.
Water from developed land to the north of the ditch route and south of Drennan Road could
be directed into this storm sewer through pipes extending from the south side of the development to
the storm sewer. It is also possible the grassed waterway could be eliminated. Although just a
proposal that will not be needed for probably ten years, the plan allows for the inclusion of this kind
of system into the ditch corridor. If such a system is not needed, then the distance between the ditch
and the toe of the slope could be reduced and the extra sand mined without influencing the overall
reclamation plan for the mine.
East of Academy
Mining Plan
Page D-]4
