~) - HIGHWALLS: The lower benches across the face of the quarry
should be backfilled to produce a more gradual slope on the lower portion of the
highwall, subject to geotechnical stability limitations. This will encompass the
lower processing and stockpile area.
2) - REVEGETATION: Additional topsoil will be placed where
possible on the remaining benches, above the backfill area. These areas will
then be seeded with native and introduced grasses, (orbs, shrubs and trees.
There may be access problems in getting adequate topsoil and the selected
plant species to some of the benches; or problems insuring that the material will
stay on the benches, after it is placed there, due to bench slopes and geologic
stability. Where feasible, polyacrylamides will be added on these benches to
increase the success of revegetation.
3) -COLOR: Rock staining has been successfully used at several
locations in Colorado to alleviate the marked contrast between a mined highwall
and adjacent natural terrain. Rock staining will be tried on the highwalls at the
Pikeview quarry to reduce visual contrast, and provide more natural-appearing
color on the surface of the rock highwalls. The cost-effectiveness of this option
must be reviewed to determine an optimum level of staining. Questions remain
as to the quality of the rock, which affects stain retention and longevity, and to
application problems at this location.
4) -TEXTURE 8 FORM: Finally, it may be helpful to alter the
texture and form of the highwalls at the Pikeview quarry by "rock sculpting." This
would involve cutting random grooves, staggered non-linear benches, or
-~-
