The review and recommendations of the EI Paso County/Colorado •
Springs Mining Reclamation Advisory Committee.
These guidelines are designed to address visual problems at the
Queens Canyon, Pikeview and Snyder quarries. The mining at
Snyder quarry, however, presents a different degree of reclamation
requirements. The primary focus of the following reclamation
factors is on the Queens Canyon and Pikeview quarries. Flowever,
these same guidelines and factors are also applicable in varying
degrees to Snyder quarry.
A) QUEENS CANYON QUARRY
1. TEXTURE: At the Queens Canyon quarry the texture, rather
than the form, of the reclaimed site may have the most dramatic, cost-effective
impact on visibility and aesthetic quality of the site.
2. VEGETATION: The most critical element of texture at the
site is vegetation. New vegetation will be varied in color, size and type, and will
be planted to form a visual link and transition, compatible with mined areas and
the adjacent treed slopes.
3. WATER: The most crucial variable in determining success of
new vegetation at the site is water. Therefore, a drip irrigation system will be
installed, Or polyacrylamides will be used, or both. Both are designed to assure
establishment of new tree and shrub growth on the site, and a success ratio
considerably better than that which would be expected without supplementary
irrigation, and/or growth amendments.
•
-a-
