<br />Reclamation Re-Vegetation <br />During site reclamation, it is recommended that topsoil be spread over all areas to be re- <br />vegetated in lifts not to exceed 4 inches and worked into the slopes to ensure good adhesion and <br />to minimize soil creep. In order to re-establish normal levels of microbial activity in the soil, <br />compost at the rate of one cubic yard per 1000 ft2 should be mixed with the soil. If compost is <br />not applied, after topsoil is replaced and before grass is seeded, the soil should be tested to <br />determine the need for additional fertilizer. Normal recommended seeding dates are from <br />November ls` through Apri130" ;seeding should be done in unfrozen soil. It should <br />be applied at a rate of 4,000 pounds per acre and crimped into the soil to anchor it. Crimping <br />should be cross slope or on the contour, if possible. The State of Colorado has a list of certified <br />weed-free straw available on the Internet or it can be obtained through local county extension <br />service offices. All surface water should be diverted away from the re-vegetated slopes to a <br />point where it can safely flow down slopes without the potential of serious soil erosion, <br />Weeds in the re-vegetated azeas will need to be controlled by mowing or herbicide application <br />until grasses are established, usually the first four years after planting for native species.
