Reclamation Re-Vegetation
During site reclamation, it is recommended that topsoil be spread over all areas to be re-
vegetated in lifts not to exceed 4 inches and worked into the slopes to ensure good adhesion and
to minimize soil creep. In order to re-establish normal levels of microbial activity in the soil,
compost at the rate of one cubic yard per 1000 ft2 should be mixed with the soil. If compost is
not applied, after topsoil is replaced and before grass is seeded, the soil should be tested to
determine the need for additional fertilizer. Normal recommended seeding dates are from
November ls` through Apri130" ;seeding should be done in unfrozen soil. A good quality seed
drill with an agitator and press wheels is recommended.
The following native grass, wildflower and shrub seed mix and application rates aze
recommended for re-vegetation in soil types found in the mine area, and are based on NRCS
"critical area" seeding rates that aze double our normal rates.
Table A
Common Name 100°k
PLS/Acre % in Mix Total LBS of
PLS needed
per acre
Sand Bluestem 16.0 15 2.4
Sideoats rama 9.0 14 1.3
Prairie sandreed 7.0 15 1.1
Blue rama 3.0 8 0.2
Switch rass 5.0 14 0.7
Western wheatgrass 16.0 15 2.4
Pu le rairie clover 6.0 5 0.3
Fourwin saltbush 1.0 5 0.1
Wintertat 1.0 5 0.1
Prairie coneflower 6.0 2 0.1
Scarlet lobemallow 6.0 2 0.1
Total 100% 8.8
Note: If seed is broadcast, recommended rate should be doubled.
We recommend mulching re-vegetated areas with clean weed-free straw or native hay. It should
be applied at a rate of 4,000 pounds per acre and crimped into the soil to anchor it. Crimping
should be cross slope or on the contour, if possible. The State of Colorado has a list of certified
weed-free straw available on the Internet or it can be obtained through local county extension
service offices. All surface water should be diverted away from the re-vegetated slopes to a
point where it can safely flow down slopes without the potential of serious soil erosion,
Weeds in the re-vegetated azeas will need to be controlled by mowing or herbicide application
until grasses are established, usually the first four years after planting for native species.
