SOILS INFORMATION
3. A = 0-5 inches; sandy loam, 30 $ clay, very dark grayish
brown lOYR 3/2 moist, non-calcareous, pH = 7.8,
AC = 5 to 10 inches; sandy loam, 10 $ clay, dark grayish
brown lOYR 4/2 moist, strongly effervescent, pH = 8.0,
weak medium prismatic parting to weak medium subanqular
block structure.
Ck = 10 to 53 inches; loamy sand, 3 $ clay, brown lOYR 5/3
moist, strongly effervescent, pH 8.2, few fine
carbonate filaments and soft masses, massive.
Due to dryness, I could not auger deeper than 53 inches.
This site was mapped soil symbol 112:
Ustic Torriorthents. This is a broadly defined unit
in Logan County; however, this soil falls with in
the range of this map unit. The soils are light
colored, thin surface, and sandy loam textures.
4. A = 0 to 5 inches; sandy loam, very dark grayish brown lOYR
3/2 moist, non-calcareous, pH = 7.6.
Bt = 5 to 12 inches, clay loam, 30 percent clay, very dark
grayish brown iOYR 3/2 moist, non-calcareous, pH = 7.8,
strong medium angular blocky structure.
Bkl =12 to 15 inches; loamy brown 10YR 4/3 moist, strongly
alkaline, pH = 8.0.
Bk2 =15 to 2i inches; loam, brown lOYR 5/3 .moist, violently
effervescent, pH = 9.0, weak fine and medium platy
structure.
Bk3 =21 to 26 inches; loam, brown lOYR 5/3 moist, strongly
effervescent, pH = 8.8, many fine and medium soft
carbonate masses and filaments, weak fine and medium
platy structure.
Bk4 =26 to 28 inches; loam, brown 10YR 5/3 moist, strongly
effervescent, pH = 8.8 weak fine and medium platy
structure.
Could not auger deeper than 28 inches. There may be soft
rock underneath. There appeared to be some evidence of
rock structure below this horizon.
This site was mapped 24 - Dix-Altvan complex, 9 to 25
percent slopes.
Summary
Site 1: The depth of topsoil is about 16 inches thick for
reclamation use. The soil material below 16 inches would probably
still support plant growth, but it has a little higher pH as well as
lower organic matter content.
Site 2: The depth of topsoil is about 30 inches thick for
reclamation use. The soil below to inches would still support plant
growth. As in site 1, roots would still penetrate this material.
