MINI
Requbem ent: Any topsoil that is stockpiled for more than one season OR is not frequently added
to will be seeded.
DISCUSSION: Although topsoil stockpiling will rarely be needed in [he future for this
operation. Protection of the stockpiles that are created is important. Most of the soils removed from this
point on will be used very soon or immediately after removal. Any stockpiles will be planted with the
following mixture. This planting will be applied to those portions of the stockpile [hat will no longer
receive additional soil. Where additional soil is periodically added to the stockpile, no planting is needed
as those areas will be in a highly disturbed condition most of the time and any planting would not have
sufficient development time to provide protection. Furthermore, stockpile areas that are frequently
disturbed [end to have a very rough surface in contrast to stockpile areas that have been undisturbed for
some time. The rough surface tends to capture water and reduce wind erosion.
Pueblo East -Mixture for Use on Topsoil Stockpiles - (broadcast seeding)
S ecies Variet Ibs/acre PLS PLS seeds/s foot
Western W heatgrass Arriba 8.0 20.20
Slender W heatgrass San Luis 6.0 21.90
Tall Wheatgrass Jose 10.0 18.14
Alkali Sacaton Salado 0.50 20.18
TOTALS= 24.50 80.42
Based on NRCS recommendation with modification for temporary growth on stockpiles.
STEP 4: Overburden Stripping and Storage
Requirement: Overburden will be removed from each area as i[ is opened for mining rather than
over the entire area all at once.
Requirement: Overburden removed from lands mined shall be used to construct the barrier berms
of sediment basins in Phase 1 as well as final blending with wash fines [o complete backfilling.
DISCUSSION: The overburden exists not only directly above the gravel but usually
immediately above the ground water level. At certain times of the year (late winter) the ground water
level may decline to the point where there is some gravel above the ground water, but generally the top of
the water table is located at the interface of the overburden and gravel.
