Bob Oswald
Re: Sunday Mine, Permit M-1977-285
Request for Technical Revision
Page 3 of 6
- Sunday Mine, including access road, surface dumps, portal, several buildings, and all
related surface installations and disturbances;
- S-1, S-6, S-7 vent shafts in close proximity to each other;
- S-2 through S-5 and S-8 vent shafts;
- Power drop location and surface storage impoundments located between S-4 and S-5;
- Two local power drops near the main road over the ridge south of the mine site; and
- Local access roads connecting remote sites as follows: S-1, S-6, and S-7; S-3 and S-5;
and the access road into the power drop and impoundment site between S-4 and S-5.
The total Affected Area of the sites listed above is approximately 40.0 acres.
The enclosed updated maps address the following outstanding questions, which were noted
during the Division's review of the Operator's previous submittals;
- S-2 Vent is included in the acreage calculation for vent shafts rather than the acreage
for the Sunday Mine site, where the vent is actually located.
Response: This classification was made simply to segregate the disturbances for the
remote vent shafts; however, since S-2 is located in the Sunday yard, this area can
certainly be included in the Sunday Mine site acreage calculation if this is more
straightforward.
- Ownership information on power lines and related installations is needed.
Response: The ownership of all surface power installations has been added to the
enclosed 1" = 200' and 1" = 100' maps.
- Fenced electric transformer platform at the power drop and pump hole location is not
shown on the map.
Response: The fenced transformer platform has been added to the 1" = 200' map.
- Is the 18"vent immediately south of the Sunday yard apre-Law disturbance?
Response: Yes, the 18" vent hole south of the yard is a pre-Law feature; the hole is
covered with a metal cap.
Reclamation Plan
The Operator wishes to take this opportunity of submitting a proposal for a Technical Revision
to make clarifications and revisions to the reclamation provisions in the Permit so that
reclamation practices will be uniform (subject to individual site conditions and requirements) for
the five permits held by this Operator in the Sunday Mine area. These changes will facilitate
reclamation planning and execution.
Portal Closure: As noted in the Permit, the Sunday Mine portal will be permanently
closed by pulling the timber sets in the portal entrance and backfilling with barren rock. The
portal entrance structure and gate will be removed prior to final plugging of the portal. The
decline is approximately 10' x 10' in section. The Operator proposes that, prior to closing the
portal, site debris and trash be placed in the portal for permanent burial. This will include
placing debris from buildings and concrete floor slabs, which will provide a solid stop against
which backfill material will be placed.
