7.3 Synthetic Liner
• 7.3.1 Materials
A synthetic liner shall be placed over the liner base
fill to provide an uninterrupted barrier beneatF~ the tailings
facility and collection structures. Liner materials for the
previously mentioned facilities shall consist of 40-mil very
low density polyethylene (VLDPE) and 60- or 80-mil high density
polyethylene (HDPE) as specified by the Drawings. The liner
shall meet the following requirements, or as approved by the
Engineer:
40-mil VLDPE
Thickness (nominal) mils 40 mil ASTM D1593
Thickness, mils, minimum 36 mil ASTM D1593
Density (g/cc), max 0.935 ASTM D1505
Carbon black content, % 2-3 ASTM D1603
Puncture resistance, lb 55 FTMS 1O1C2065
~ Tear strength, lb 17 ASTM D1004
•
Ultimate tensile strength, lb/in 140 ASTM D638
Ultimate elongation, % 1,000 ASTM D638
Modulus of elasticity, psi 15,000 ASTM D882
All values, except when specified as minimum or maximum,
represent average lot property values.
60-mil HDPE
Thickness (nominal) mils 60 mil ASTM D1593
Thickness, mils, minimum 54 mil ASTM D1593
Density (g/cc), max 0.94 ASTM D1505
Carbon black content, % 2-3 ASTM D1603
Puncture resistance, lb 270 F1MS 1O1C2065
Tear strength, lb 30 ASTM D1004
Ultimate tensile strength, lb/in 180 ASTM D638
Ultimate elongation, % 500 ASTM D638
Modulus of elasticity, psi 80,000 ASTM D882
All values, except when specified as minimum or maximum,
represent average lot property values.

32
