5.0 EXCAVATION <br />• 5.1 General <br />5.1.1 Scooe of Work <br />The excavations to be performed include, but are not <br />limited to, stripping and grubbing, removal of topsoil, <br />shaping, and required excavations in structure foundation <br />areas, embankments, access roads, and borrow areas. <br />The Contractor shall be solely responsible for <br />determining the excavation potential of soil and rock <br />materials, water table conditions, and other pertinent <br />subsurface information. Borehole, test pit, and geologic <br />information as shown on the Drawings and additional information <br />on site conditions is available to the Contractor. Actual <br />conditions may vary from the information shown. The Contractor <br />• ~ shall satisfy himself with additional subsurfaces information, <br />if he so desires and at his own expense, for bidding purposes. <br />5.1.2 Handling of Material <br />The Contractor shall use only the materials obtained from <br />required excavations which meet applicable specifications, <br />except as allowed by the Engineer. Such materials may be placed <br />in the designated final locations direct from the excavation, <br />or may be placed in temporary stockpiles and later placed in <br />the final location as approved by the Engineer. T'he Contractor <br />shall schedule excavation operations so as to avoid or minimize <br />stockpiling and rehandling of excavated material. <br />5.1.3 Cuts and Slopes <br /> The Contractor shall inspect all temporary and permanent <br />• open-cut excavations on a regular basis for signs of <br />16 <br />
