Menoken Series
Menoken-Chacra clay loam (MkA) occurs on 0 to 2 percent slopes and occurs on upland slopes
where bedrock is close to the surface. Menoken series soils are moderately deep, well drained or
moderately well drained and moderately fine textured. These soils have an approximate 4 to 5 inch
thick surface layer that is light brownish gray or grayish brown, friable and granular. The subsoil is
typically a light yellowish brown or light olive brown, moderately fine textured soil with weak,
prismatic structure or moderate, subangular blocky structure. Starting at a depth of approximately 14
to 18 inches, the substratum is a light brownish gray, calcareous clay loam. Depth to bedrock ranges
from ] 8 to 40 inches. Menoken-Chacra soils are moderately susceptible to erosion if managed poorly.
Chipeta Series
Chipeta-Persayo-Rance Complex (CIC) occurs on 2 to 10 percent slopes and is generally found on
hills and ridges where Cretaceous shale beds are near the surface. Chipeta, Persayo and Rance soils
make up equal parts of the complex. The Chipeta series soils are shallow, well-drained and fine-
textured. These soils have apale-yellow or light yellowish brown granular surface layer
approximately 4 inches thick. The gray subsoil closely resembles the underlying shale but has a weak,
blocky structure. Typically, the underlying shale starts at a depth of approximately 10 inches and is
gray or light yellowish brown in color. Vegetation usually consists of mat saltbush, Gardner saltbush,
shadscale saltbush and scattered stands of galleta, Salina wildrye and squirreltail. Chipeta soils are
highly susceptible to erosion and require careful management.
Roush Broken Land
Rough Broken Land (Ru) is found on the steeply sloping sides of mesas. This soil type includes
exposures of sedimentary shale and sandstone, very gravelly alluvial material, colluvial debris and
shallow soils. It supports fair to good coverage of native grasses, sage, cactus and brush.
Haldorson Sand and Gravel Mine 44
