Mesa Series
Mesa Clay Loam (MIA) occurs on 0 to 2 percent slopes and occurs on top of high mesas. Mesa
series soils are deep, well drained and moderately fine textured. Mesa soils have a pinkish gray or
brown, friable, granular surface layer approximately 3- to 4-inches thick. The subsoil is moderately
well developed, brown or light brown, and moderately fine textured with moderate, prismatic and
blocky structure. Below a depth of approximately 15 to 16 inches, the substratum is very pale brown
or brown loam that is typically calcareous and very gravelly and cobbly. The depth to bedrock is
approximately 60 inches. Mesa soils are not highly susceptible to erosion.
Mesa Gravelly Clay Loam (MoA) occurs on 0 to 2 percent slopes and is found on old high terraces.
Mesa series soils are deep, well drained and moderately fine textured. Mesa soils have a pinkish gray
or brown, friable, granular surface layer approximately 3- to 4-inches thick. This surface layer is
approximately 15 to 30% gravel and cobblestones. The subsoil is moderately well developed, brown
or light brown, and moderately fine textured with moderate, prismatic and blocky structure. The depth to bedrock is approximately 60 inches.
Mesa soils are not highly susceptible to erosion.
Mesa gravelly clay loam, shale substratum (MsA) occurs on 0 to 2 percent slopes and is commonly
found at the outer edge of old terraces where thin layers of alluvial sediment overlie sedimentary rock.
Mesa series soils are deep, well drained and moderately fine textured.
