•p: N1~18'94 1801 No .009.P.03
supplement the Pad d-2 material, but that is not certain. If we did use Cresson ore in addition,
it would likely be placed between rows of Pad /!2 material az we explained above. To provide
adequate flexibility, we are asking that approval be provided to use either material, the Cresson
ore or the Pad A"l material.
Either material would be required to meet the grain size specification presently approved in the
permit. No change in that material specification is requested. That specification is listed on
page 2200.0 of the approved CONST:iUCTION QUALITY ASSURANCE (CQA) PLAN and
reads az follows:
6. Drain Cover Fill -processed, free draining, well graded Cresson Ore
placed in the Prelttartt Solution Storage Area or spent heap leach ore from
the No. 2 Carlton Heap Leaching Facility phrced on the remainder of the
pad wnforming to the following SPECIFICATIONS:
Pregnant Solution Storage (CCdcV note: aLro requested for other areas)
Auras:
U.S. Standard
Sieve Size
Percent Passing
by Dry Weight
1.5-inch 100
3/4-inch 70 - 100
3/8-inch 40 - 70
No. 4 5 - 50
No. 40 0 - 20
No. 200 0 - 8
Plasticity Index: 0
]n order shat we ensure that oversize rocks are not incorporated in the Drain Cover Fil] material
from Pad A'2, we have instituted a program to visually screen all materials both at their origin
(Pad /t2) and when placed on the Valley Leach Facility. This program has been developed in
four parts. First, a visual inspection to remove any oversize material from the liner along with
measures to control wrinkles has been in place since the start of Drain Cover Fill placement.
Second, a more explicit protocol was i;~stituted to ensure that adequate QA and labor personnel
were present. Third, the protocol was strengthened is response to a brief omission of adequate
personnel. Fourth,.additional measures were undertaken to control the source material. These
elements are in addition to the specifications that are an integral part of the permit.
I believe you are in receipt of the memorandum from Golder Associates, Inc. to Bateman
Engineering, Inc. regarding "Drain Cover Fill Placement Procedure" dated October 11, 1994.
2
