8. Montrose County Impacts and Environmental Imaads
The following items address Section XII -Gravel Mine Operations in Montrose County.
A) Buffers
No mining or stockpiling will take place within 25' of the boundary of any adjacent property. The
permit boundary near the northern portion of the Metcalf Pit is within 25' of the Nation property,
however this area will not be disturbed as seen on Map C-2 Mining Plan. To increase buffer distance
for landowners south of the project area, the lower 40 acres of the George Property has been
removed from the permit area and will not be disturbed.
B Landscapin¢
Initially, approximately 10 acres of Phase 1 will be stripped of topsoil and overburden. This material
is approximately 4850 cubic yards. The material will be used to construct berms_around the
perimeter of Phase 1, leaving one small opening for the haul road exit to 6175 Road. The berms will
be approximately 8 to 12 feet high with 3H:1 V slopes. Once the operation mines down to an
approximate depth of 40-47 feet, the visual impact to the surrounding area will be minimized. As
mining proceeds to the south, it will occur from the bottom so that the visual impact of the operation
will remain minimized.
An additional 10 acres will be mined where topsoil and overburden will be used to create berms on
the east and west sides of the permit area. This topsoil and overburden will be stripped with scrapers
and can be done in approximately 5 days. The shaping of the berm will require an additional 8 days.
Once this initia120 acres has been stripped of topsoil and overburden, mining will continue south
from the bottom of the pit. The only activity that will be visible is the subsequent removal of topsoil
and overburden. Since the annual production is 400,000 tons sold, an average mining depth of 34.5
feet will require that an average of 6 acres be stripped per year. This will be done with scrapers
making a loop from the stripping area to the pit itself, where it will be backfilled on the pit slopes to
Haldorson Sand and Gravel Mine 18
