June 24, 2003 -40- 003-2203.7
Poly-Flex cut 1-inch wide samples (coupons) from each trial seam and tested the coupons with a field
tensiometer. Poly-Flex tested each double wedge fusion trial seam twice for peel adhesion (peel) and
once for bonded seam strength (shear). Poly-Flex conducted peel tests on fusion welds on both the
inner and outer Vacks of each peel coupon. Poly-Flex tested each extrusion trial seam twice for peel
and once for sheaz.
Golder personnel observed the testing of trial seam samples and documented test results. Golder
observed the tensile testing of each trial seam coupon to verify that project yield strengths were met
during shear testing and that failure did not occur in the weld during peel testing. When Vial seams
did not meet specifcations, Golder verified that the welding apparatus was not used until two
consecutive Vial seams performed by the same technician apparatus combination met specifications.
The Vial seam test results for extrusion and fusion seaming are presented in Appendix K-2 and L-2
for the lower and upper geomembranes, respectively. Poly-Flex used two tensiometers during the
project. Tensiometer certifications are presented in Appendix N. Figures 3 and 4 show the codes
used to designate passing and failing test results.
• 6.1.3.2 Seaming Observations
Golder personnel observed seams before, during and after welding. Golder checked each seam for
adequate overlap prior to seaming and to verify that the seam area was clean and dry.
Golder documented Poly-Flex personnel performing the seaming and the seaming equipment used.
Following the completion of seaming and routine repairs, Golder checked the full length of each seam
to verify that no additional repairs were required. In the event that additional repairs were needed,
Golder marked the location requiring repair on the geomembrane, documented the location, and
brought the repair area to the attention of Poly-Flex. Once Poly-Flex made repairs, Golder checked
the repair location to verify completion. Golder inspected all seams for quality and completion.
Golder personnel conducted a final walk-through to verify completion of the entire geomembrane
system and to identify any additional damage that may have occurred during construction operations.
Golder recorded observations made during seaming. For the lower geomembrane layer, the
fusion-welding summary is presented in Appendix K-3, and the extrusion-welding summary is
presented in Appendix K-4. For the upper geomembrane layer, the fusion-welding summary is
presented in Appendix L-3, and the extrusion-welding summary is presented in Appendix L-4.
1:~po~l2oAa00~PmCenPSSA06m~opllzos.app.p13I3Rep.aa Golder Associates
