The high belt tensions for the conveyors necessitate the use oP steel reinforced
belting, which because oP its weight and lateral rigidity, tends to be inherently
self-aligning. The belting is very long-wearing and hsa a relatively small
stretch !actor, which simplified the design oP the take-up system.
The majority of belt wear and damage occurs at the conveyor transfer points.
The coal is accelerated in the direction of the belt travel before loading and is
centered on the belt.
Belt cleaners are placed at the head pulley of each conveyor. They prevent coal
accumulations ahead oP the belt turnovers and reduce snub pulley wear.
Western Fuel-Utah, Inc. commits to a maintenance plan for removal of coal
accumulations along the Overland Conveyor Strucutre. Singificant accumulations
that occur from spillage during the previous month will be removed and disposed
of at the Refuse Area. Halt turnover areas as well as sediment control
structures will be inspected_mon_th_ly for_ accumulations and cleaned as necessary.
~ Areas that cannot be reached by motorized vehicles, such as CNV-1 above the
Bath House parking lot, will be cleaned using manual labor. A hay bale and silt
Pendsediment trap strucurre has been installed at this area Por additional
rotection of coal tines contamination into the undisturbed drainage system.
Long conveyor belts are twisted 180 degrees after the belt passes the discharge
pulley. This puts the clean aide of the belt in contact with the return idlers
which reduces idler and belt wear and prevents particles oP coal Prom falling
under the conveyor. Another 180-degree twist is made ahead o! the tail pulleys.
Conveyors era covered the entire length. The covers extend about
three-quarters of the area around the belt in order to protect the conveyor from
snow and rain and keep the wind from blowing coal off the belt.
The conveyor drive consists of an electric motor and a variable-speed
hydroviscous drive for gently accelerating the belting during start-ups (soft
starts). The electric motor accelerates before the conveyor load is engaged.
The variable-speed drive clutch plates begins st 100 percent slip. Then the
automatic controls bring the clutch plates together at a controlled rate until
there is no slip as the conveyor reaches Pull speed. The conveyor start-up time
can be adjusted from a few seconds to over several minutes. Drive units for
the conveyors have been standardized by using 700-hp motors and
variable-speed hydroviscous drives and couplings to minimize the spare parts
inventory.
rrP.,_ , i i9n~ Tv_ , a
