The desiccation can be corrected with
watering, but without a system for irrigating the trees they
cannot be watered. Furthermore, if early freezing damages
the root system, watering does little good to save the tree
- the damage is already done.
With respect to the Williams Canyon seeding and tree
planting, this projec[ is at the mercy of the weather,
Following is an explanation of this matter. It is likely
that grass seeding will be completed by the end of October,
but as noted below, if the weather continues quite warm it
might not be done until November. This is a west facing
slope and therefore tends to be rather warm. To plant too
early would be a serious mistake.
1. WILLIAMS CANYON WORK
a: The date of seeding of these disturbances it
totally at the mercy of the weather. So long as [he sail
temperature in the upper 1 to 2 inches of the soil is above
about 45 degrees planting is hazardous as it could result in
a failure due to germination of the seed just before a hard
freeze. A few nights with temperatures in the twenties
followed by cool days with highs in the 50's should lower
the soil temperature to the low 40's where planting is safe.
This may or may not occur prior to October 18. We have no
control over the weather. It is possible the soil
temperatures could be too warm well into November, but that
is highly unlikely. Usually it is safe to plant in late
October.
