~1 <br />Topsoil from newly disturbed areas will be spread on previously reclaimed areas. <br />If there aze no areas to reclaim as topsoil is being produced, excess topsoil from the <br />western areas of Stages 2, 4, 5, and 6 will be stockpiled in Stage 6 or 7 as appropriate. In <br />the eastern aeeas of Stages 2, 4, and 5 topsoil will be stockpiled along the northern, <br />eastern or southern permit boundary. The majority of Stage 2 is devoid of topsoil because <br />of prelaw mining or because of disturbance caused by the sports cycle park. <br />After topsoil is removed, the overburden is mined and used to reclaim mined <br />aeeas. In the event there are no areas to reclaim as overburden is being produced, excess <br />overburden will largely be stockpiled west of the mining operations in Stages 2, 4, 5, and <br />7. After the overburden is removed, the clay will be mined and stockpiled. <br />The clays to be mined lie in almost vertical strata (70 to 80 degrees from <br />horizontal) which are interbedded with sandstone and coal seams. Clay stockpiles will be <br />located in east of the mining operation in Stages 2, 4 & 5. <br />Large volumes of sandstone and coal, called interburden, in the clay will make the <br />material unsuitable for the manufacture of brick. Approximately 40 percent of the pit <br />volume is expected to produce interburden. Interburden is mined in conjunction with the <br />clay and used to reclaim mined areas. In the event there aze no areas to reclaim as <br />interburden is being produced, excess interburden will largely be stockpiled east of the <br />mining operations along the northern, eastern or southern permit boundaries in Stages 2, <br />4 & 5 or in the eastern areas of Stages 2, 4 & 5. The interburden stockpiles located near <br />topsoil stockpiles will be kept separate from the topsoil stockpiles. <br />The main source of water in the mining areas is expected to come from minor <br />surface water runoff. In the pits currently being mined, it has been noted that water from <br />runoff generally percolates through the sand leaving the pits relatively dry, Stages 2, 4 <br />and 5 may have slightly greater drainage courses. During mining, these courses will be <br />diverted, as needed, to isolate the mined areas from the drainage courses. <br />The operator does not expect to disturb the prevailing hydrological balance of the <br />affected land nor the surrounding area or the quality or quantity of water in surface and <br />groundwater systems during or after the mining operations. <br />11 Revised: Dec. 2003 <br />
