grotu~ter monitoring r~niirements should be totally reevaluated.
DH-70Z: ~i-70 is located adjacent to Fast Mine workings which were mined in 1984.
Water quality samples have not been obtainable fran this location since
1986 and none were obtained in 1992. Monitoring at this location should
be t®~orarily discontinued until such time as the Fast mine bemires
active again. Water levels appear to have stabilized at this location and
continued monthly maac~,ramant is not warranted.
GR-77': GR-77 is located cutside the zone of potential subsidence impacts. Water
quality samples and water levels have not been obtainable at this location
since 1987. 'This well has two perforated itttervals (140' - 240' and
440' - 480') but the associated lithology is uNoiown. The well apparently
was plugged in 1987. Volume 10 of the permit docimient suggests that water
level maa~+~*p~nts at this site are suspect and may be the result of
filling up the drill hole for electrical-geophysical logging. Volume 10
indicates the initial static water level at this well was 506' below
ground. The water level has since been mea_~+~red at arourri 110' to 120' .
There is currently pronounced organic decatg~osition of something taking
place in this well and further monitoring should be abandoned until and
unless the well can be rehabilitated.
SW-6: No water quality samples were obtained from SW-06 during 1992. No retreat
mining has occurred within this watershed to date. A sufficient water
quality database exists to characterize pre-mining water quality at this
site. Flow measurements fr~n April 28 (22.6 cfs) and June 2 (3.4 cfs~
were omitted from the database. Monitoring at this site should continue
as currently required. This site should have been monitored more
intensively but was last in the shuffle of trying to adhere to the rest
monitoring program. No water quality samples were obtained.
SW-9': SW-9 is located outside the area of any potential mining impacts. SW-9
was relocated on the Overlarri Ditch in the NI;; SF}; Section 5, T13S, R92W.
Zhis site measures irrigation water which is turned out of the Overland
Ditch and which does not pass through the mine permit area. Further
monitoring of this site should be discontinued.
SW-11': SW-11 monitors flows in Roatcap CYeek below SW-6 after flows from Fast aryl
West Roatcap Creeks converge. Further monitoring of this site should be
discontinued. No additional information regarrlirg flows from the permit
area can be obtained frwn SW-11 that is not provided by SW-06.
UII2C': Monitoring of UII2C originated frcan concerns of the Division during
construction of the West Mine facilities (see CMCRD inspection dated 11-
25-86; item 16). CWI agreed to weekly monitoring of TSS and TDS at this
site. Subsequently, the Division allowed a reduction in the frequency of
monitoring to once per month (see Ci+1LRD inspection dated 01-15-87; item
3). Monthly sampling has been conducted ever since. Vegetation has
beowne firmly established on the disturbed slopes in the seven years since
this sampling was initiated. Recent samples shwa no wnsistent pattern of
difference between ilII2C aryl LII2C. This monitoring should be discontinued
as the wncerns which prompted the monitoring, namely sediment transport
15
