EXH.IBI'T E - Reclamation Ylan Con[.
The reclamation plan will involve the following processes:
~1_..)___ Slo~i.ng___and Gradi~•. The sides of the mined area will he
sloped and {traded to 3:1. 'fhe bottom will be graded to almost
tlat with a taw undulations. 1'h is phase is usually accomplished
with a tront end loadec or a small dozer.
.(~__ Spreading_ot 'Topsoil.. Attar sloping and grading, topsoil
that has been stockpiled will be transported by dump truck to
area to be reclaimed. When spreading toVSOiI on sloped hanks,
the material is pushed down the slope to a depth of 6 to lY
inches. This depth was recommended by the Colorado Devart:ment ut
Highways and is what we are now using in our current reclamation
plan. 'Phis work has to be done with a small dozer, but the small
depressions that are left by the tracks of the machine provide an
excellent seed bed for tuture germination.
~i~ Seedin~gc Attar topsoil is spread, a mixture of drouRht-
resistent grass seed will be broadcast using a mechanical hand
seeder. This method is effective because you can visually see
where and how much seed you are applying. When working in r.he
bottom of the pit, we have had success with first, land seeding,
then dCeging a wooden 1'L" x 11" beam over the area to help push
the seed into the topsoil.
This method of seeding must be done in late tall, prior to snuw
tall, in order to be effective. Because of the amount. of snow we
get in this area, there is usually a fairly deep laver oY snow
from November to March. The weight of the snow keeps the seed
from blowing away and also pushes it into the soil to promote
early germination.
TyPe of Seed _an_d_Rate of Planting.
In 1991 and 1992 we used the toTlowing seed types and applied it
at the following rates for 1 acre.
1. Russian Wild Rye
2. Western Wheat Grass
3. western Wheat Grass (Arriba)
4. Intermediate Wheat$rass
Total
9.6 lbs per acre
4 lbs per acre
l0 lbs per acre
9.6 _lbs per acre
'.i3.'L lbs per acre
8
