13
1 to jaded by what it is we see--to people who live in this area, I
2 think these are probably really serious environmental problems,
3 but I hope you understand this Board comes xith a prospectus that
4 problems we deal with like abandoned pools of cyanide mixed with
i 5 flowing streams, you know, hundred-acres areas where no
6 reclamation at all has been done and tailings are blowing.
7 When you see our insignificant to severe and this isn't
8 severe, the reasoning is that there aren't any toxic chemicals
9 involved. You know, there is no eminent threat to human life.
10 Unless somebody's up that canyon and one of the rocks
11 bounced down. Sut I guess I conclude simply by saying that, you
12 know, .I look at say a couple of cases we did this morning where
13 we had, you know, one case two hundred feet along a gulch that's
14 dug up basically by hand with a little help from a backhoe, and
15 we find that a violation and, you know, we can fit 10 of them
16 into these scares.
17 I guess I have to come done and saq I don't feel that
18 there is any reason to be punitive here, I am glad the company
19 brought this matter to our attention, but for the reasons I
20 outlined most specifically I am afraid of our losing our handle
21 with this, I am not comfortable with not finding a violation.
22 I have said enough to this, I think at this time I am
23 going to clam up but I did want to state my view.
24 MR. O'CONNOR: Addressing your first point, that is an
25 excellent point that I have not given consideration to. It
