the use of a compass and pacing. Cover transects originated
from sample locations, which are marked on the enclosed map.
The number of samples taken in each area is listed in Table
5 of the appendix along with estimates of disturbed acreage.
Total Vegetative Cover:
Total vegetative cover was estimated using an optical
point frame developed by ESCO Associates. Point sitings
were located along a 50 meter transect stretched out either
northwest, northeast, southwest, or southeast of the sample
location. The 50 points per transect (one point at each
meter interval) comprised a single sample unit. Cover was
identified by species, or as rock, litter, or bare ground.
For the purposes of estimating total vegetative cover, only
first hit data was used. Second hit data were recorded when
a first hit intercepted Canada thistle (Cirsium arvense), in
case CMLRD should determine that this species' cover cannot
be applied toward meeting the standard.
Species Identification:
Voucher specimens were collected and confirmed or
identified by Dr. William A. Weber, retired Curator of the
University of Colorado herbarium. Nomenclature follows Dr.
Weber's book "Colorado Flora: Western Slope; 1987; Colorado
Associated University Press, Boulder, Co."
3
