~~.
-z-
liners. I leave discussed the urgency of this work with the construction
manager at the site and Vie revealed that [hc liners (which are presently
on site) must be installed by specially trained technicians who will be
provided by the liner manufacturer. Arrangements have been made for their
arrival on December 18 - 19. The installation work will take 4 - 5 days
per pond. I have given instructions that the sediment control pond be
completed first. 1'lie construction manager has expressed a concern that
' 'the upcoming hulidays may delay compleCiun of Choir work. While I can
assure you [hat we will take every available step [o have the liners in-
stalled as soon as possible, delays due to holiday observance may 6e
beyond our control.
All site drainage control culverts have been installed at the loadout site.
Straw bales have been replaced at the loadout where the area for the con-
veyor base was excavated above the river bank. Additional straw bales
have been placed a[ the upstream end of the box culvert along the north
side of North Thompson Creek.
The mine No. 1 escape tunnel was constructed 20 - 30 years ago by the
original operator of the mine, North Thompson Coal and Coke Company.
While many accurate, detailed drawings of the mine workings are available,
none of them include the relatively short escape tunnel spur. At this
time, I have been unable to find any maps or drawings which would aid in
your evaluation of the escape tunnel area. Lining of the stream bank in
the vicinity of the ventilation building terrace with large rip-rap is
being considered at the present time,
As we discussed during our phone conversation on December 15, 1980, the
antifreeze chemical we rotund to use in the conveyor washdown water at
[tie loadout site is "Winterflow Coal Aid 1/101" and is supplied by Union
Carbide.
Topsoil Iandling
The timing of revegetation aC the loadout as well as intended seed mixtures
are discussed on pages 90 and 117 of the permit amendment application.
I have recently discussed the importance of proper topsoil handling with
our surface Eureman. I I~avc also asked liim to instruct tl~e equipment
operators working at the rcCuse disposal site co use extreme care not to
cover any topsoil with waste material.
'technical revisions will br prepared Cor any plan changes occurring at
the Loadout site, and will be submitted Eor your review as required.
