• 4.2 Cover _
Vegetative cover was estimated using the Point Intercept method with 100 foot
transects and a pin drop at two foot intervals for 50 points per transect. Each transect
comprised one sample. Only herbaceous vegetation, litter, rock, and bare ground were
recorded. Cover data for woody plant species was not collected.
4.3 Production
Production data was collected from one-meter squaze quadrats. All current year
above-ground herbaceous plant biomass (except for annuals and noxious weeds) rooted
within the plots was clipped. Samples were separated by life-form and were not species
specific. Production samples collected were oven dried at 80° C for at least 24 hours to
• obtain a constant weight. Weights were then recorded to the nearest 0.1 gram.
Production data for woody plant species was not collected.
4.4 Shrub and Half-Shrub Density
Shrub density was only calculated for samples on the reclaimed area. Shrub
density data was not collected on the reference areas because this reclamation success
criteria is not based on reference azea data. Sampling consisted of counting all individual
stems protruding from the ground within randomly located belt transects two meters wide
by 50 meters long.
•
5
