PROGRESS ON THE QUEEN'S CANYON QUARRY: Perhaps you have noticed ghat much of the
very light color is gone. That is the result of spreading about 2i) to 25 acres of
donated topsoil. The soil was seeded in May and germination was quite good. Of
course you cannot see much growth from a distance because native grasses, except
under ideal conditions, mainly put on root growth the first year., Next year they
will put on top growth and produce seed to expenad the population. We feared the
hot, dry weather of late June would kill many of the seedlings. tin inspection on
July though showed only moderate stress on the seedlings, much to our surprise. We
are not sure where the seedlings are getting the moisture, but it oartalnly has not
been from rain. It now appears that only some local spot seeding wi1L be needed this
fall. Secondary spot seeding is a fairly normal procedure in reveF;etation work in
and and semi and land reclamation.
Considerable progress has been made in discussions with the State in finalizing
e plan for this operation. Although the details cannot be discussed, the results are
largely derived from the Scar Commission studies and additional considerations and
thoughts. We are not sure when the discussion results will be released, but it
should not be much longer.
We hope this update has been informative.
