S¢rt Luir Pr¢jecr • • Specijc¢rians
Gabions shall be fabricated in such a manner that the sides, ends, lid, and diaphragms can be
assembled on site into rectangulaz baskets. Each gabion shall be assembled by tying all untied
edges with special hooks provided by the manufacturer. The gabions shall be installed as per
manufacturer specifications. Filter fabric shall be placed on the channel subgnde prior to
installation of the gabion baskets. All the gabions within each channel segment shall be placed
in position with the each basket attached to one another with rings supplied by the manufacturer
prior to filling with rock. Gabions shall be filled with any type of machinery starting firom the
bottom of the slope and working in an upslope direction. Every effort shall be made to keep
voids and bulges in the gabions to a minimum, and the exposed surface shall be smoothed. After
the filling is complete the lids shall be unrolled in place and tied to the sides, edges, dividers and
diaphragms as shown on the manufacturer's instruction diagrams.
E.3.3.2 Concrete Grout
The concrete grout shall consist of Portland cement, fine aggregate, and water. The concrete
shall contain not less than 470 pounds of Portland cement per cubic yard. The concrete should
contain air entrainment and have a 28-day compressive strength of at least 2400 psi. The amount
of water used shall be that designated by the Engineer to obtain a slump of between 5 and 7
inches so that it will gravity flow into the void spaces.
The surface of the gabions to be grouted shall be cleaned of dirt. The concrete grout shall he
placed in a continuous operation for any day's run at any one location. Concrete shall be
brought to the place of final deposit by use of chutes, tubes, or buckets, or may be placed by
mesas of pneumatic equipment or other mechanical methods. In no case shall concrete be
permitted to flow on the riprap surface a distance in excess of 50 feet. The grout shall be placed
in a minimum three-inch layer on the surface of the gabion baskets to protect the wire and reduce
interface velociries.
All concrete shall be cured for not less than 3 days by (1) impounding water mver the exposed
surface, (2) covering with burlap or a similar material that is kept continuou6ly moist, or (3)
spraying a concrete sealing compound evenly over all exposed surfaces according to
manufacturer's directions.
B¢ttfe Mountain Resource, Inc.
