. The area of the proposed ECME lies immediately to the south of the existing East
Cresson Mine in an azea that is known locally as the upper Vindicator Valley. This area is
within the volcanic diatreme located within the District.
Drawings G-1 and G-2 located in Exhibit G in the approved Amendment No. 8
application provide some background and are listed here for reference purposes.
4.6.1.1 Surface Water
There is generally no surface water in the area of the proposed ECME except during
snowmelt or following heavy precipitation events. The azea has been previously
disturbed through historic mining activities. There aze no perennial or intermittent
streams located in this azea.
The Vindicator Valley drains to what is known locally as Theresa Gulch, which is in the
upper reaches of the Wilson Creek watershed. Theresa Gulch is ephemeral to
intermittent.
4.6.1.2 Ground Water
Due to the volcanic diatreme in the District and the historic drainage tunnels, the azea is
unsaturated and does not contain significant quantities of ground water. Present mining
• activity by CC&V has not encountered ground water other than local perched water
tables that tend to contain a limited amount of water. Deep drill holes within the volcanic
diatreme [end to be dry or have low yields. There has been no ground water encountered
in the East Cresson Mine, immediately to the north of the proposed ECME. In addition,
drill holes in the area of the ECME have been generally dry or have encountered only
small amounts of perched water. As with the East Cresson Mine, no ground water is
anticipated to be encountered in the ECME.
Wildlife (4.6.21; Soils (4.6.3): and Vegetation (4.6.4)
The ECME is du•ectly south of the existing East Cresson Mine. Notwithstanding the
investigations completed as part of prior permitting activities, CC&V decided to engage
Greystone Environmental Consultants Inc. ("Greystone") to provide an updated
environmental report for wildlife (threatened, endangered, and sensitive species), soils,
and vegetation in the general azea of the proposed ECME. This report was generated
following a review of the Amendment No. 8 reports and a field investigation conducted
in March 2004, during a period when the ground was open and not snow covered.
The conclusions in the original Greystone Report and as confirmed by the updated report
are listed below:
