• Additional information collected on the volcanic diatreme confirms previous
geochemical chazacterizations and indicates that water infiltrating through the
diatreme will contact up to 2,000 feet of neutralizing rock before reaching the
ground water system that eventually flows to the Cazlton Tunnel; and
• Amendment No. 8 activities aze not expected to have a substantial effect on zinc
concentrations in the Cazlton Tunnel.
Additional work has been completed for proposed TR 43 by ABC. The full report titled
Hydrogeochemistry of the East Cresson Mine Extension and dated May 18, 2004 is
contained within Appendix 1 to this application. A total of 2,137 samples were collected
from 88 drill holes in the proposed ECME and analyzed for acid/base accounting
determined through carbon and sulfur analyses. The conclusions of the geochemical
work in this report are:
As with Amendment Nos. 7 and 8, surface mining- activities in the ECME aze not
expected to result in detectable impacts on the quantity or quality of the Carlton
Tunnel flows.
^ The results of the Carlton Tunnel water quality sampling indicate there has been
no significant change in water flow or quality as a result of surface mining
activities to date in the District.
^ The ECME will not cause any incremental increase in infiltration or any
incremental increase in pazameter concentrations of water entering the diatreme.
^ The scale of mining activities already undertaken at the site is considerably
greater than those proposed in conjunction with the ECME.
The fundamental conclusion is that there will be no measurable effect on ground water
quality or flow resulting from the proposed ECME.
4.6 Environmental Setting
The environmental setting for the Cresson Project is fully described in the Amendment
No. 8 application in the Volume I, Project Description, Section 4.6. The supporting
information for threatened, and endangered species, vegetation, soils, and wildlife,
compiled by Greystone Environmental Consults Inc., is contained in Volume III,
Appendix 2 of the Amendment No. 8 application.
The proposed ECME is within the Amendment No. 8 area and hence is included in the
environmental study azeas defined above. Nevertheless, CC&V provides the following
discussion for reference purposes.
4.6.1 Hydrology
The hydrology of the Cresson Project, as described in the Amendment No. 8 application,
has not changed.
