associated with ambient conditions coupled with a mechanical system to maximize air to water
contact by minimizing water droplet size. Water pumped from the backfill wells would be
moved through a system consisting of high hydraulic pressure with mechanical air make-up (e.g.,
snow-making equipment) to maximize air to water contact. This system would be contained on a
geomembrane lined system comprised of either high density polyethylene (HOPE) or polyvinyl
chloride (PVC) membrane, depending on the estimated life of the option. The ideal goal would
be total evaporation of liquid volume and accumulation of constituents of concern in solid or
sludge form, which would be managed in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local
requirements.
To allow complete evaporation, the lined application basin would be constructed upgradient of a
single lined collection pond. This pond would serve to collect and retain the non-evaporated
portion of the pumped water, and this portion would be recirculated back through a mechanical
evaporation system. Non-evaporated volumes would be continually recirculated until the
extracted water balance is exhausted.

Upon completion of the operation, all materials (i.e., piping, electricaUcompressed air services,
etc.) would be removed from the site. The exposed geomembrane covering would be either
closed in place in the collection pond or removed and disposed of in accordance with applicable
federal, state, and local requirements.
4.4.4.2 Hydrologic Barriers
Groundwater flow from the West Pit could be influenced by the installation of some form of
physical barrier (e.g., slurry wall or sheet piling) in the zone where groundwater flow from the pit
occurs. Although feasible to construct, the physical barrier would not work without some other
form of groundwater control. Groundwater recharging the backfill from the Precambrian
bedrock would eventually cause the water table in the backfill to intercept the ground surface,
which would serve only to alter the location where groundwater flows from the backfill, but
would not eliminate the flow from the pit.
•
Battle Movrsfairs Resources, Irsc.
pa/002671repartslmarchrptllrl6wtrmrtgtmarch.doc 59 Marth 22. 1999
