T0: Planning Commission
~_Mesa _County Commissioners )
DATE: 14 May 1992
RE: Parkerson Gravel Pits
TO ALL OF THOSE CONCERNED:
Once again, we find ourselves writing to implore you to reject the expansion
and continued extraction of gravel from the Parkerson Gravel Pit at 31 S C.
Road. My husband, Jerry, and I are speaking out to protest this pit for several
reasons which follow. There are many reasons why we do not want this pit
or any other gravel pit in our neighborhood, but our main concerns are listed
below. Please weigh these very heavily before you make any decisions.
1) Agriculture: We, along with all the other people in our neighborhood,
do not want this or any other commercial Industry iti our neighborhood. This
is an agricultural community, and we want to keep it that way. [de moved here
to raise our children in an undisrupted atmosphere of peace and tranquility
of an agricultural area, the "country" if you will. This is no place for
commercial development, especially such an unsitely project as a gravel pit.
We like living in the country -- NOT ON INDUSTRIAL BOULEVARD! This pit will
take a great portion of our precious farmland, destroying the natural beauty
we moved out here far in the first place. Whv should this agricultural area
be squeezed out by industrialism, esoecially when this area is our prime farmland??
From previous experience, and if you would care to come see this for yourself,
the land already excavated has not been returned back normal and will never
be! It is desolate and a disgrace to the company who made it that way.
2) Safety Hazard: This is a BIG ONE! Probably one of the major concerns
is the safety hazards that we must put up with in our neighborhood. Don't
forget, many families live here who have children. The roads here in the
country are narrow and go up and down hills. The gravel trucks pose a great
threat to our safety, whether we are biking, walking, jagging, or driving.
Children are constantly riding bikes and_olaving near these roads. This is
a RESIDENTIAL AREA with all kinds of traffic, and it is no place for a gravel
truck. Whether these trucks are going 10 miles an hour or 50 miles an hour,
we all know what one caould do to a human being or pet should they .
get in the way. We are all afraid to go for a walk anymore along the narrow
roads, and we won't let the small children out of our sight for Eear of getting
run-aver. Relieve me, one of those trucks coming at you, even at a creeping
speed, will scare you to death. Let's face it, one of those trucks could
not stop if. they wanted to -- they are just too big! The traffic from the
trucks is extremely heavy now! They have destroyed C. Road already with huge
potholes repaired over and over again and caving in of pavement. THESE ROADS
DO NOT HAVE SHOULDERS AND ARE VERY NARROW. With more pit excavation, the
traffic will be ridiculous, and our roads will be totally destroyed. These
roads were not constructed for this type of heavy traffic. We find ourselves
having to travel on the opposite side of the road many times in order to avoid
the huge holes, sometimes 6x6 foot areas. This is HAZARDOUS, especially when
there are no signs warning you of such.
3) Noise: The noise the trucks create is incredible and unbearable much
of the time! We feel as if we live in a construction conglomerate rather
than in a residential area. Give us a break! We all hear these trucks first
thing in the morning and the last thing at night, even INSIDE THE HOUSE! Keep
in mind, we have to live with this!
