Cotter Corporation - C-JD-9 Mine
Stormwater Management Plan -Permit 1! COR-040028
Revision 1 -January 28, 1994 -Page 2
Waste Storage Areas -This is the 2.4 acre mine dump located just outside
the JD-9 portal.
Vent Holes - There are three vent holes #1 (.09 acres) #2 (0.09 acres)
and ~3 (.34 acres). The vent holes were assessed and that assessment revealed
that there is no potential for appreciable run off.
Access Roads -The graveled access road to the mine office is approximately
700 feet long (.26 Acres). The access road to the mine water treatment
ponds is 1650 feet long (.61 acres); this access road has a flat gradient,
porous soils, and extensive vegetative coverage which allows precipitation
to infiltrate into the soil instead of running off.
Mine Water Treatment Ponds -Two water treatment ponds are used for
settling solids pumped from the mine, along with abarium-radium sulfate
co-precipitate which is formed as a result of the mixture of a barium chloride
solution with the mine water. The initial pond is 50' x 50' x 10' deep
(.06 Acres) with a holding capacity of approximately 74,600 gallons below
the discharge pipe. The second pond is 122' x 130' x 6' deep (.36 Acres)
with a holding capacity of approximately 472,300 gallons below the discharge
pipe.
4. Stormwater Management Controls
a. SWMP Administrator
The SWMP Administrator for this site is Dave Diss, the Environmental
Technician for Cotter Corporation's Western Slope Office.
b. Risk Identification and Assessment
Site risks include the following:
Waste Stora a Area -The mine waste storage area has the potential to
be impacted by the drainage which has been blocked off in one area with
waste material. Although there is a 48" diameter culvert located in the
waste dump to allow runoff to continue down the drainage, this outflow
has a substantial impact on the downstream face of the waste dump and
the drainage channel immediately downstream from the waste dump.
