'Flora: smaller canyon floors are mixed conifer and aspen with mixed brush, brass and fort understory <br />~~~ ' and occasional meadows; north facing slopes of North Fork Gunnison Canyon support scrub oak with <br />~'~ ~} ~ oak/chokecherry brush, grass and forb tmderstory; recrnt slide areas support similar, but lower, denser <br />vegetation <br />20. Soils/Geology: soils are generally coarse sandy ]oams with abundant rock outcrops, slabs, tabular <br />cobbles and angular gravels formed on upper Cretaceous sandstone and coal beds of the Mesa Verde <br />Formation; more resistant Paleocene and lower Eocene claystbnes, mudstones, sandstones and <br />conglomerates of the Wasatch Formation form higher cliffs, bluffs, ridgelines and mesas of the higher <br />terrain rising to the south <br />21. Ground Visibility: poor to good (5-40%) on canyon floors and small benches; fair to very good (30- <br />70%) on steep slopes; poorest visibility in narrow canyons (EE and EE-twin) and on slide slopes <br />22. Comments: lazge sandstone blocks and outcrops were "crumbly" and heavily weathered, and none in <br />survey azeas exhibited stable enough faces to preserve rock art; no overhangs suitable for temporary <br />shelter were found <br />V.
