Mr. Berhan Keffelew
February 14, 1990
Page 2
the vault to the sanitary outlet of the Preparation Plant building.
This pipe would convey discharge from the toilet facilities only
and would be retained in the vault. Once again the sewage
collected in the vault would be periodically pumped by a licensed
contractor and disposed at an approved location.
Shower Water Collection from Industrial Building
The second influent pipe to the manhole at the Industrial
Building carries shower water which is now combined with the toilet
discharges. Plans are to direct shower discharge water through
approximately 1050' of buried 4" pipe to a collection point (drop
box) South of the thickener. At this point the shower water would
combine with any thickener or plant process water and would flow
through two 6" lines into Pond 006.
Since Pond 006 is a process water pond, the inflow of
shower water will have no effect on its operation and will provide
an additional source of process make-up water. Colorado Department
of Health was contacted regarding this modification and replied
that no N.P.D.E.S. Permit changes were required as long as no water
was discharged.
The modifications described above are proposed to upgrade the
existing facilities. WFC will be working with the Las Animas
County Sanitarian to assure proper installation of the two vaults.
It is WFC's intent to abandon the pipe associated with this
construction and to fill the septic vaults with overburden material
upon completion of mining activities at New Elk Mine. The only
reclamation costs identified for this revision are described below.
Material Required to Fill Two Vaults
1500 Gallons capacity each = 3000 Gallons
7.48 cu.ft./Gallon - 3000 x 7.48 = 22,440 cu.ft.
or 830 cu.yd.
830 cu.yd @ $1.00/cu.yd = $830.00
