BATTLE MOUNTAIN RESOURCES Page 9~
San Luis Project Technical Specifications
The pipe shall be a high density polyethylene (HDPE) corrugated pipe with an integrally formed
smooth waterway. The pipe shall conform to AASHTO classifications for "Type S" (smooth
waterway) pipes. The pipe shall have a full circular cross-section, with an outer corrugated pipe
wall and an essentially smooth inner wall. Corrugations may be annular or spiral. Alternative
pipe sizes, material types, or classifications must be approved by the Designer. Pipe dimensions
and Specifications are shown in the Drawings.
The HDPE pipe shall be installed in strict accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and
recommendations. Sections of pipe shall be positioned so as to minimize any offset on the inside
of the pipe joints. The pipe shall be set to the lines and grades shown on the Lrawings, or as
established by the Designer. Pipe sections shall be joined in such a manner that the ends are
fully entered and the inner surfaces are reasonably flush and even. Deflections or "kinks" are not
acceptable. Pipes and pipe fittings shall be made of virgin polyethylene compounds which
conform with the requirements of cell class 324420C as defined and described in ASTM D3350.
A minimum pipe pazallel plate stiffness, as tested in accordance with ASTM D2412, of 40 psi is
required.
The fittings shall not reduce or impair [he overall integrity or function of the pipeline. Fittings
may be either molded or fabricated. Common corrugated fittings include in-line joint fittings,
such as couplers and reducers, and branch or complimentary assembly fittings such as tees, and
end caps. These fittings may be installed by various methods, such as snap-on, screw-on, bell
and spigot, and wrap azound. Couplings shall provide sufficient longitudinal strength [o preserve
pipe alignment and prevent sepazation at the joints. Only fittings supplied or recommended by
the pipe manufacturer shall be used. Neoprene or rubber gasket shall be used where designated
on the Drawings.
Installation of the pipe shall be in accordance with ASTM Recommended Practice D2321. Pipe
laying shall begin at the downstream end of the culvert. The lower segment of t}re pipe shall be
in contact with the prepared bedding throughout its full length. Recesses in the bedding shall be
made to accommodate the shape of the bell and spigot pipe, if necessary, which should be placed
with the bells facing upstream.
After the conduit or section of conduit is installed, it shall be inspected before any backfill is
placed. Any conduit found to be damaged shall be replaced, and conduit found to be out of
alignment or shall be taken up and re-laid, at the Contractor's expense.
N:\DHALLMANtiSANLUIS~SANLUIS.DOC 9~ SRK Project No. 1473?
